The man who penned these words in 1873, Horatio G. Spafford, had suffered incredible loss and yet these words that he penned have strengthed the hope of many! If you are walking through a painful trial today, hold onto this thought, “But, Lord, ’tis for Thee, for Thy coming we wait, The sky, not the grave, is our goal!”

Thanks so much for this. Have you heard the story behind the hymn’s writer? It breaks my heart:
100 or so years ago there was a family that needed to move across the Atlantic (not sure which way-to/from America and to/from England. The Father had some business he needed to finish up, so his wife took their children and went on ahead; he would come later. The ship got caught in a terrible storm and sank, with no survivors. When the father made the trip later, he asked the ship’s captain to let him know when they were at the place in the ocean where his whole family had perished. When the time came, he was overwhelmed, but felt content that his family was in heaven. From that he then wrote the “It is well with my soul” (lyrics only?). I know very few people, no matter how strong their faith is, that could have done that. I certainly would not be able to.
I may have missed some parts of the story, as I am writing from my memory of what I’ve read.

So excited to find your page! This song has special meaning to me. My precious Godly Momma was diagnosed with cirrhosis of the liver 16 years ago. She had never had a drink in her life. She lived for 12 years with this condition. God was able to work through her during this time. 4 years ago, the doctors sent her home from the hospital to die. He explained the situation and then asked if she understood what he was saying. She said, “Yes, I do. And IT IS WELL WITH MY SOUL!” Friends, there is nothing sweeter than for our grieving family members to know that we are ready to LIVE in the presence of the Lord!!
